Passing of Sir Brown Bai KBE, CSM, CBE

It is with great sadness to announce that one of our Directors, Sir Brown Bai, passed away on 1st February 2019 in Port Moresby. Although he had not been well for some time, it did not stop him from being an active member of our industry. He gave great service to Papua New Guinea, working his way up through the Civil Service since 1976 to become Secretary for Primary Industries, Secretary for Treasury and ultimately Chief Secretary. He latterly served as the PNG Ambassador to the EU in Brussels. Sir Brown Bai had great affection for New Britain Palm Oil, serving several positions throughout the years. He was a Director of Ramu Sugar and later Ramu Agri Industries from 1982 to 2007, he served as chairman of CTP (PNG) Holdings up until NBPOL’s acquisition in 2010, and became a member of the NBPOL Board in May 2010. While he held many Board positions in the country, he was always passionate about agriculture. He was Chairman of the Rural Industries Council, the Palm Oil Producers Association and had been Chairman of the Oil Palm Industry Corporation. Informally, Sir Brown Bai was a wonderful mentor and advisor for many senior managers and CEOs in the NBPOL family. No matter what pressures and seemingly insurmountable challenges we faced, Sir Brown could always be relied upon to give good, solid and candid advice which was always punctuated with a grin and a chuckle. He was a great friend to us all and will be sorely missed.
